David Healy has backed Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty to flourish at Euro 2016 and close the gap on his all-time goals record. The 28-year-old netted seven times in qualification to fire Michael ONeills men to a first major tournament since 1986.Despite being used sparingly by Norwich this season, and ending the campaign on loan at Birmingham, Lafferty will carry Northern Irelands hopes on his shoulders in France. Healy played with Lafferty at international level and when both were at Rangers, and he reckons ONeill has brought out the best in the former Burnley forward.Hes got all the talent in the world; hes an international talent and I know because I played with him for Northern Ireland and spent 13 months in Glasgow with him at Rangers, Healy said.He was one that Michael turned around. He had a disappointing campaign in the previous campaign and then spoke to Michael. He made him aware of his responsibilities and you can see the change in Kyles attitude. Lafferty (left) and David Healy played together at club level as well He was a big success story, scored seven goals in qualifying and was one of the main reasons why Northern Ireland qualified.Kyle will relish it going into the Euros, hes fit and free from injury and can be the marksman. Northern Ireland should be going there with no pressure and will hopefully enjoy it.Its the first time a team from pot five actually topped the [qualifying] group so they should be full of confidence with nothing to fear.As he closes on a 50th cap, Lafferty stands second on the all-time goals list, 20 behind Healy, with the two sharing a similar goals-per-game ratio. Healy has scored more goals for Northern Ireland than any other player Should Lafferty eventually surpass his old colleagues total, Healy will be among the most delighted supporters.Records are there to be broken, Healy said.I was fortunate enough to play for Northern Ireland but I grew up in Belfast supporting Northern Ireland so I want people to achieve good things for Northern Ireland.Kyles in the process of hopefully denting my goal-scoring record. He might beat it, he might not beat it, but I certainly wish him well. BCCI president Anurag Thakur has dismissed the idea of four-day Tests, as well as the two-tier Test system, saying neither change would necessarily solve the longest formats biggest problem: poor attendances. If you dont have a foolproof format in front of you, where is it going to help the game of cricket? I think we should not even [get into] into that, Thakur told ESPNcricinfo in Florida, on the sidelines of Indias first official series in the USA - the T20s against West Indies. When asked if he was referring to the idea of four-day Tests or the two-tier system, Thakur said: It is four day versus five day, it is two-tier as well.We should analyse the shortcomings [of Test cricket], he said. Is it the paucity of time? The issue is why arent you getting enough crowd for a Test match? That is the basic issue.According to Thakur, the obstacles to Test crickets popularity have more to do with competition from other sports in an increasingly crowded landscape.Ask yourself: football, how much time does it take to finish the game? Hockey, how much time does it take? American football, rugby. Fans, on one hand, have these kind of games which are finished in two hours time at the most; crickets shortest format, it takes close to three, three and a half hours. So that is one reason, Thakur said.Second, there is a generational gap I believe. We must look into the crowd which comes in England, Australia or in India. What is the average age who comes to watch Test cricket. India is a young country..dddddddddddd We have a lot of youngsters. Whether they connect with T20, ODI or Test, you cant force the fan.It is the fan who has to decide what he wants to see. You can give all the products, he is the best judge whether he has interest in A, B or C. So we are playing all formats. Lets see which is the most watchable product. On the topic of possible day-night Test cricket in India, Thakur said that the BCCI is not in a hurry to take any decision and will continue carrying out trials during the ongoing Duleep Trophy. Only after the competition is complete will the board revisit the discussion on the pink balls suitability in local conditions. This is one of the tournaments where we are trying the pink ball, Thakur said. Well take the feedback after the tournament is completed. Once it is completed, BCCI can take a call in future whether pink ball is viable in Indian conditions or not, whether it will help to make Test cricket more popular. We have a long season at home where we are hosting New Zealand, England and Australia [and Bangladesh] for Test matches, playing 13 Test matches at home and we have already finished four [away] with West Indies. So 17 Test matches in a season is a huge, huge period. When globally most countries are not playing enough Test cricket, BCCI is sticking to it, trying to make it as popular as other formats and well try our best. ' ' '
