Transfer Kurt Benkert has won the battle to be Virginias starting quarterback.First-year head coach Bronco Mendenhall made the announcement Wednesday.Ive really been impressed with how hes moved the team. When I look at a quarterback, what I look first and foremost for is do they move the team into the end zone because points determine outcome, Mendenhall said. Kurt has been the one that I think has consistently and can continue to be consistent in terms of moving our team forward regardless of the type and caliber of opponent that we play.Hes a good decision maker, very strong arm, and he has natural leadership skills.A transfer from East Carolina, Benkert beat out incumbent Matt Johns and Connor Brewer, both fifth-year seniors, for the job. Johns started all 12 games last season and threw 20 touchdown passes, but also was intercepted 17 times.Mendenhall said Johns and Brewer will begin the season as co-backups.Benkert, who got married this summer, was to be the starter at East Carolina last season before an injury ended his year. He will be more than a year removed from surgery when the Cavaliers open on Sept. 3 against highly regarded Richmond of the Championship Subdivision. In practice, Benkert felt like the deciding factor to getting the starting nod was consistency and big play ability. Weve had a lot of big plays throughout camp and stretched the field a lot, so its definitely helped.Coach Ruffin McNeill was fired by ECU after last season, and when McNeill joined Mendenhalls staff, Benkert followed him to Virginia. He had already graduated, making him eligible to play right away, and said reuniting with McNeill was a benefit in the move.I feel really lucky to be able to see him every day. Hes a great person and hes always fun to be around and he always brings a lot of wisdom to the room, Benkert said of McNeill, the Cavaliers assistant head coach and defensive line coach.Mendenhall, who led BYU to 99 wins and 11 bowl games in as many seasons as coach, replaced Mike London as coach following the season. He said when he was hired that his preference is for a dual threat quarterback, and Benkert believes he is that kind of QB.Im not the fastest guy on the field by any means, but I definitely break tackles inside the pocket and outside the pocket whether its subtle movements or just extending plays on the run to throw the ball downfield, Benkert said. I feel like thats a big strength of mine.Benkert said the coaching staff has stressed the need for him to slide to prevent injury, but at a chiseled 231 pounds he said, If I need a first down or the game is on the line, Ill take over from there. That might out well for Virginia, which finished 4-8 and failed to qualify for a bowl game for the fifth consecutive season last year.---The APs college football page: www.collegefootball.ap.org---Follow Hank on Twitter: www.twitter.com/hankkurzjrNmd Schuhe Sale Deutschland . NICE, France -- Iceland has become the darling of the European Championship thanks to its underdog status and an uncompromising 4-4-2 formation that has made the team unbeatable so far in France.Dont expect any changes when the smallest country in the tournament takes on the host nation at the Stade de France on Sunday. We didnt have so much problems defending (against) the English, and also in ball possession we created a lot of good chances, the teams co-coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said after his team came back from an early deficit to stun England 2-1 in Nice. If the players play with the same attitude, we can beat anyone. In qualification and now in France, the collection of unheralded Icelandic players has forged into a tight-knit formation that gives away almost no chances and has proved clinical when it has broken out to swiftly turn defense into attack. Two 1-1 draws against Cristiano Ronaldos Portugal and then Hungary followed by a 2-1 defeat of Austria ensured Iceland qualified for the knockout stage in its first appearance at a major tournament. Then came Monday nights round-of-16 clash with England and another victory that sent the remote island nation of 330,000 people into ecstasy.Whoevers not out celebrating is probably trying to get a ticket to France for the next game, Thorir Gudmundsson, a charity worker from Reykjavik, said after the win.The fever pitch in Iceland is matched by the teams traveling fans in France. After the game at the Stade de Nice, the Iceland players led thousands of their supporters inn a traditional Viking chant called the Huh! -- repeating the guttural-sounding title over and over in an effort to terrify opponents.ddddddddddddThe chant also echoed through the streets of Nice, where fans wandered through the city deep into the night looking for one more beer to celebrate, while many England fans trudged back to their hotels. They were amazing, the boys on the pitch were fantastic but the fans were amazing, said Hallgrimsson, a dentist when he is not coaching his country. Hopefully in Stade de France we will have more tickets and we can import a lot of Icelanders.Kari Arnasons pairing with Ragnar Sigurdsson at the heart of Icelands four-man defense is a key platform for the team and will have to be at its best against the likes of Dimitri Payet and Antoine Griezmann at the Stade de France.Me and Ragnar have got such a good cooperation now, Arnason said. We felt we had it under control the whole game. And if their opponents do get past the back four, there is always goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson to stop them.Halldorsson, a film director when he is not keeping for Iceland or Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt, has saved a tournament-leading 23 shots. He may well be among Icelanders able to pick up a lucrative new club contract after the teams showing in France. Some of these players ... deserve to get contracts at higher levels than they are playing now, co-coach Lars Lagerbaeck said.
