CLEVELAND -- The way the World Series pregame media conferences work, the next days starter often follows the teams manager on the dais. For Indians manager Terry Francona, this opens up a chance for him to needle his player in the on-deck circle. With Game 6 starter Josh Tomlin approaching the podium Monday, Francona let loose as he left.If you guys have questions, just use pictures, Francona said.Tomlin laughed, appreciating the clubhouse humor. Thats the thing about the 32-year-old Tomlin that gives the Indians so much confidence -- he takes everything in stride. If Tomlin doesnt win, he wont beat himself, and he wont back down, Francona said of Tomlin just a few minutes earlier in a more serious moment. All the things we talk about, not backing down from a challenge and valuing winning and things like that, being a good teammate, he embodies all those better or as good as anybody Ive ever seen. The common perception as the World Series returns to Progressive Field is that the Indians are at a starting pitching disadvantage going into Games 6 and 7, because both their starters, Tomlin and Corey Kluber, will be pitching on three days rest, while reigning NL Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta and NL ERA leader Kyle Hendricks will get the ball for the Cubs. This might be wrong. The most obvious reason is about who is not pitching in this game, namely Trevor Bauer.Against Kluber and Tomlin, the Cubs have hit just .183 overall and a meager .071 with runners in scoring position. Against Bauer, the Cubs batted .364 overall and .444 with RISP. Not coincidentally, the Indians two losses in the series were in Bauers starts. If the Indians blow the World Series, Bauer wont be involved, though of the 25 men on Clevelands roster, he has been arguably the least helpful to their playoff success. First and foremost, Bauer put his club in disarray by hurting his pinkie finger on a drone, which basically took him out of the American League Championship Series. The Indians bullpen and an unknown rookie named Ryan Merritt bailed out Bauer in that series.Between his division series start against the Red Sox, his four batters faced in the ALCS and his two starts in the World Series, Bauer has thrown a grand total of 13 innings. He has a 5.54 ERA, and he did not last five innings in any of his starts.Tomlin has been everything that Bauer hasnt been during the playoffs. He has given Francona the potion to work his magic, as Francona has been able to go to his bullpen in each of Tomlins starts with the Indians having the lead or with the game tied. This has led to victories in each and every one of Tomlins three starts. Tomlin has thrown just 15? innings, but he has allowed only three earned runs (1.76 ERA).In the postseason, you are looking for guys that are not going to beat themselves, pitching coach Mickey Callaway said. The Indians wont allow Tomlin to get beat, because they will limit him. He threw only 58 pitches in Game 3, which Callaway described as like an extended bullpen session. Even if he is strong, it would be surprising if Tomlin goes any longer than five innings. We have been talking to these guys, Go out and close the inning, Callaway said. You are the closer when you are in there. Whether it is one out, two outs, it doesnt matter how many outs, just be a closer and have that mentality and dont ever back down.Franconas mindset works in nine-inning segments. The whole playoffs, he has shown how smart it is to manage mostly for today and not always trying to be too cute in an attempt to perfectly manipulate outcomes. In Game 6, there is little doubt that Franconas approach will not deviate. He might even be more aggressive in using Andrew Miller, Cody Allen and the rest of the bullpen to try to drive home the first Indians title in 68 years. This will not impact Tomlins mindset. You dont think about, Oh, great, Ive got four guys behind me that have been lights-out, Tomlin said. Im just going to go out there and throw two innings and hopefully theyll come get the ball. You go out there with the mindset of going as deep as you can in the game. And whenever Tito walks out there to hand you the ball, you know youre in good hands whenever those guys come in.In reserve, the Indians have Kluber waiting for them.Andre Dillard Womens Jersey .com) - The Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks both take aim at their first wins of the season on Saturday, as the Canucks open their home slate at Rogers Arena.
