Canelo Alvarez received a second opinion on his injured right thumb from a hand specialist in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and the doctor came to the same conclusion as the first one: Alvarez does not need surgery and is on track to fight again in early 2017.Alvarez suffered an avulsion fracture of his right thumb during the second round of his eventual ninth-round knockout of Liam Smith to win a junior middleweight world title on Sept. 17 before 51,240 on Mexican Independence Day weekend at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, in Arlington, Texas.A few days after the fight, Alvarez saw hand specialist Dr. Pedro Jaime Lomeli in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico. After undergoing X-rays and a CT scan, Alvarez was diagnosed with the avulsion fracture but was told he would not need surgery. Then Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs), 26, took a vacation before heading to Los Angeles to see Dr. Kenneth R. Sabbag for another opinion.Canelo came up to Los Angeles [on Wednesday], and we took him to see the doctor, who took off the cast he had on from the doctor in Mexico, Golden Boy president Eric Gomez told ESPN on Thursday. The doctor did another MRI and came to the same conclusion as the doctor in Mexico, which is that Canelo doesnt need surgery. He needs to rest the hand.He put another on and will take it off on Nov. 10, and then Canelo can start using the hand. If he has any more discomfort, he needs more rest. If he doesnt feel any discomfort or pain, then hes ready go.Gomez said that if Alvarezs hand remains pain-free, he could fight in the first quarter of 2017. He had been scheduled to fight Dec. 10 against an opponent to be determined, but that was scrapped because of the thumb injury.Hes open to a fight in the first quarter, assuming theres no discomfort with his hand, but well have to play it by ear, Gomez said. Well have to make a determination if we want to do a fight then or if Canelo wants to rest it until fighting in May.Alvarez vacated his middleweight title to move down in weight to fight Smith. With most boxing fans anticipating a showdown between Alvarez and unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs), Alvarez said he would likely fight twice more before eyeing a September 2017 fight with GGG.
