This will be the busiest weekend without actual games played on the NFL calendar, with all 32 teams required to pare their rosters to 53 players for the regular season before signing a 10-man practice squad. There are many different types of transactions that can be made, some of them easier to understand than others.Heres a list of the most common moves that will be announced around the league after the deadline on Saturday afternoon:RELEASED: When a team drops a player from the roster whos considered a vested veteran, with four or more years in the league, his contract is terminated and hes immediately free to sign with any other club. Only after the trade deadline, set this year for Nov. 1, does a vested veteran first pass through the waiver system.WAIVED: When a team drops a player from the roster with less than four years of service. He must go through the waiver process, during which he can be claimed by another club over a 24-hour period. Through the first three weeks of the regular season, the queue follows the same order in which teams picked in the most recent draft. From the fourth weekend of the regular season through the Super Bowl, priority is determined by inverse order of win-loss records around the league. If a player passes through waivers unclaimed, he becomes a free agent.RESERVE/INJURED: When a team places an injured player on a reserve list thats exempt from the 53-man limit. Hes ineligible to return in the same season.RESERVE/INJURED WITH DESIGNATION TO RETURN: Each team has one such card to play each season, when a player on injured reserve can return to practice after at least six weeks on the list and play after at least eight weeks on the list.RESERVE/PHYSICALLY UNABLE TO PERFORM: When a player is placed on a reserve list that doesnt count against the 53-man limit for a minimum of six weeks. Theres a window from the week of the seventh regular-season game extending through the conclusion of the 11th regular-season weekend when players on the PUP list can begin practicing. If a player is not moved to the active roster after three weeks of practice, he reverts to injured reserve and cant practice or play the rest of the season. The PUP list, like the designation to return, is essentially a short-term injured reserve.RESERVE/NON-FOOTBALL INJURY OR ILLNESS: Mirroring the PUP list rules, this is for players hurt outside of team activities or have a medical condition preventing them from participation.RESERVE/SUSPENDED: This is a list for players, also exempt from the 53-man limit, who are serving NFL-ordered suspensions. Theyre not paid, and they cant practice with the team until theyre returned to the active roster.PRACTICE SQUAD: Each teams 10-player practice squad can be assembled beginning on Sunday. Up to four of the players can have two accrued seasons in the league, as counted by spending at least six weeks on a teams active roster or reserve list. Players can spend two seasons on the practice squad, as defined by at least six weeks equaling one season.---Online:AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL coverage on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Cheap Custom Raptors Jersey .ca NBA Power Rankings, ahead of the Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs. MONTREAL -- Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin put his offseason focus on leadership and character. After a historically embarrassing loss on Friday night, hell get a chance to see what his team is made of when it hosts the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday night at the Bell Centre. The Canadiens were manhandled 10-0 by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, matching a franchise record for goals against in a shutout loss. The team looked even flatter than they did in a winning cause against Vancouver on Wednesday, when goaltender Carey Price bailed them out.Price will return to the net Saturday, as Montreal (9-1-1) looks to get back on track. No ones losing confidence, no ones losing faith in this locker room; we fully believe in each other, said winger Brendan Gallagher, who called the loss embarrassing. Its just one of those things -- learning from last years lessons. Were going to learn from it.Adversity has the opportunity to either crumble you or make you stronger, he added. Were going to see how we come out but I believe in everyone in this locker room. The Canadiens had been as stingy as they come in their first 10 games, allowing just 13 goals in that stretch. After Fridays result, the teams goals-against average went from 1.30 up to 2.09. The penalty killing unit, which had allowed just four goals on 40 opportunities, went from 90 percent to 82.2 percent after giving four goals on five Columbus power plays.Aside from the already-planned goaltending change, there could be more coming for Montreal. Left winger Daniel Carr and defenseman Joel Hanley were called up from the AHLs St. Johns Ice Caps earlier in the week. The Fllyers (6-5-1), in town for the second time in just under two weeks, bring a three-game winning streak into Saturdays tilt.dddddddddddd Theyve been the comeback kids in their last two outings, rallying from third period deficits for the win in a back-to-back set against the Detroit Red Wings and New York Islanders on Wednesday and Thursday. The last time these two met on Oct. 24, the Canadiens power play was the difference as Gallagher connected for the game-winning goal. Steve Mason was the starter in that game, but lately Flyers coach Dave Hakstol has leaned on Michal Neuvirth. Neuvirth has gotten the nod in three straight, including the back-to-back earlier this week. Its based on performance, Hakstol told the Philadelphia Inquirer.Former Canadien Dale Weise missed the first meeting while serving a suspension and his presence in the line-up for this one has yet to be determined. Weise, who signed a four-year, $9.4 million deal as a free agent last summer, has just one goal in eight games and was a healthy scratch against the Islanders. He can play better, general manager Ron Hextall told the Inquirer, while also acknowledging that the 28-year-old was likely experiencing a break-in period with the club. After losing defenseman Andrew MacDonald to injury on Wednesday, the Flyers could see another blue-liner return against Montreal. Michael Del Zotto, who has missed all 12 games so far this season, is eligible to return from the long-term injury reserve list on Saturday, and is expected to make his season debut. ' ' '
