MONTREAL -- The memory of their own lopsided loss was too fresh in the Canadiens minds for them to get too excited about laying a one-sided beating on the Colorado Avalanche.Max Pacioretty had four goals, Brian Flynn scored twice during a six-goal first period and Montreal routed the Avalanche 10-1 on Saturday night in their biggest offensive output at home since moving to the Bell Centre in 1996.That was weighed against a 10-0 beating they took Nov. 4 in Columbus. We went through the same thing earlier this year and we know that one game doesnt make our club, Pacioretty said. They obviously didnt show their best, just like we didnt in our game in Columbus. It seemed like everything went against us in that game and tonight everything went against them. We have a lot of respect for that club, but we liked the way we played.Flynn, Pacioretty and Artturi Lehkonen each scored against Calvin Pickard in the opening 7:12, and then Pacioretty, Paul Byron and Flynn each had a goal among the first four shots on Semyon Varlamov.Pacioretty completed his hat trick in the second period and added another in the third to give the captain seven goals in his last four games.Alexander Radulov and Jeff Petry also scored for Montreal, which has shown no drop-off without injured scoring leader and first-line center Alex Galchenyuk. Montreal outshot the Avs 36-16.We have guys that have stepped up, Petry said. Thats what good teams have when injuries come along. ... Its not just one guy. It has to be everybody.Montreals six-goal first period was its first since Dec. 17, 1992 against the Quebec Nordiques in an 8-3 win.Blake Comeau got one late in the first period for Colorado, which was coming off a win Thursday night in Boston that ended a six-game skid. The Avs end a four-game trip Sunday night in Toronto.Avalanche wing Jarome Iginla played his 1,500th NHL game. While the 39-year-old didnt figure into the scoring, he took two minor penalties for throwing punches at Alexei Emelin after the Canadiens defenseman clipped Joe Colborne with a low check with less than four minutes to play.Ive seen him throw hits like that before, said Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog, who returned after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury. I just dont like how he doesnt answer to it after when Iggy comes over.Everybody in this room is embarrassed enough. Before the game you want to win the game for Iggy and you want to play for each other and win for each other. So hands down, that was tough to see Iggy have to suffer through that game in such a milestone for him.Flynn began the barrage by scoring on Daniel Carrs rebound at 2:56, and Pacioretty fired a wrist shot past Pickard at 5:13. Lehkonen roofed a backhand from the edge of the crease at 7:12.Varlamov, who allowed six goals on 16 shots, was greeted by Paciorettys second of the night on a deflection of Andrei Markovs point shot at 8:13. Just 28 seconds later, Byron scored on a breakaway, and Flynns pass intended for Carr went in off Colbornes stick at 13:37.Comeau got one by Carey Price when he deflected Nikita Zadorovs shot in with 17 seconds left in the first period.Radulov scored on a one-timer 11:35 into the second period and Pacioretty put one in from the left circle at 18:33. Montreal was on a power play when Petrys weak shot from the point eluded Varlamovs glove with 0.10 seconds left in the period.Pickard was back in goal to start the third and was beaten at 7:28 when Pacioretty jammed in Torrey Mitchells rebound.Game notes Pacioretty added an assist for five points. ... Tomas Plekanec had four assists. After getting seven points in the Canadiens first 25 games, he has six in the last three. ... Montreal had six goals in the first 13:47. The team record is six goals in 10:35, set on March 10, 1951 against Chicago. ... Colorado forward Rene Bourque, who celebrated his 35th birthday, was out for the opening faceoff along with Iginla. ... FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Big plays. Busted coverages. Receivers running free.Thats the way things are going these days in the back end of the New York Jets defense, and opposing offenses know it.Theres a target on our backs in the secondary, safety Calvin Pryor said. Were definitely a part of the problem thats going on right now.The Jets are allowing an average of 285 yards passing per game, ranking them 26th in the NFL in that category. New York is tied for third-worst with 17 pass plays allowed of 20 or more yards, and the Jets are first -- or, last, in this case -- with seven pass plays of 40 or more yards given up.That includes the 42-yard touchdown toss from Seattles Russell Wilson to a wide-open Tanner McEvoy last Sunday , when the Seahawks receiver caught the ball in stride and there wasnt a New York defender within at least 15 yards of him.Its really not miscommunication, so thats probably the wrong choice of word, coach Todd Bowles said. You can call it `busts. Sometimes its not miscommunication when theres only one guy involved. Ive seen certain plays like that that Ive coached the secondary. I dont know if theres been as many at the same time, but overall during the course of the year, youve seen certain plays like that.Weve had way too many. And, no one has been immune from being beat for a big gain. Not even Darrelle Revis.Sure, he is banged up, dealing with a sore hamstring and uncertain to play Sunday at Pittsburgh. But he hasnt been the same shutdown cornerback he established himself to be for much of his terrific career, as evidenced by his struggles against Cincinnatis A.J. Green in Week 1 and Buffalos Marquise Goodwin in Week 2 .Buster Skrine, the Jets other starter, has had his issues, too. Starting safeties Pryor and Marcus Gilchrist have also had shaky moments for a leaky secondary. Meanwhile, the defensive line has helped New York rank second in run defense. The front is doing a great job stopping the run, Pryor said. Its our job to stop the pass and thats what weve got to go out there and do.The Jets face a tough task Sunday in trying to get their secondary right against a pass-happy Steelers offense that routed Kansas City 43-14 last week. Ben Roethlisberger threw five touchdown passes, including two too Antonio Brown.ddddddddddddSammie Coates has at least one reception of 40 yards in each of the Steelers first four games, while Browns four TD catches are tied for the NFL lead.If youre struggling as a secondary, it doesnt matter who you face, Bowles said. You have to fix your problems. So far, that has proven to be much easier said than done for the Jets. And its not necessarily a case in which the scheme needs to be simplified in the secondary.Theyre about as simple as they can be, Bowles said. Thats alarming. Many of the players point to better communication throughout the defense, talking things out and identifying what each of them needs to do on a given play.Weve had a couple of breakdowns, defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers said, but I feel totally confident that we can get them fixed. The Jets (1-3) have just three takeaways through four games, two interceptions by backup cornerback Marcus Williams, and a fumble caused by Gilchrist against Kansas City that resulted in a touchback. New York was 3-1 after four games last season, helped in large part by 13 takeaways. If you look back to last year around this time, we had a lot of turnovers and guys making plays on the ball, Pryor said. This year, weve just happened to start off slow. Hopefully we can pick it up and see how things go.It remains to be seen how the Jets will decide to defend Brown, especially if Revis is unavailable. Bowles suggested that it could be a game-time decision on Revis, who hasnt practiced this week.Williams could slide into Revis spot opposite Skrine, and rookie Juston Burris could see extended action. Darryl Roberts could be active for the first time this season, and promoting Bryson Keeton from the practice squad could also be an option.Hes very challenging, man, Pryor said of Brown. Hes a very tough receiver and can do it all. He gets the ball a lot, gets the ball a ton. I think thats what makes him one of the best. Just got to try to limit his targets. As a player, hes definitely a tough matchup for anybody. We want to try to contain him the best we can.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
