LONDON -- It was a different kind of fortnight at the All England Club. The mens final was absent Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic for the first time in 14 years. And after three near-misses in Grand Slams, Serena Williams finally hoisted the trophy that brought her even with the great Steffi Graf. With that, our 2016 Wimbledon awards:MVPNic Atkin: Few people thought Sam Querrey could hold his nerve and close out a win against Djokovic after taking the two first sets before their third-round match was suspended for the day. But credit to the American for getting the job done.Peter Bodo: Marcus Willis gets the nod over Serena Williams because he saved a truly dreary first week. His improbably run helped offset Brexit anxiety and Englands stunning loss to Iceland in the UEFA Cup.Greg Garber: Serena, hands down. She leaves the All-England Club with two silver trophies and equals the great Steffi Grafs Open era record of 22 major singles titles.Matt Wilansky: A rhetorical question. Serena, who won the singles and doubles titles, is the only logical choice. Only question moving forward is whether shell catch Margaret Court as the all-time leader in Slam wins (24).Top matchAtkin:?Federer-Marin Cilic in the mens quarterfinals. Even by Federers mighty standards, this was one of his great wins, pulling off a Houdini act to save three match points and come back from two sets down.Bodo: Serena over Angelique Kerber in the womens final. It was extremely high quality despite being just two sets. And it was historic as well.Garber: Federer-Cilic. Fantastic twists and turns -- and perhaps a final flourish for the 17-time Grand Slam champion at Wimbledon?Wilansky: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga dug himself out of an impossible two-set hole to escape John Isner 19-17 in the fifth. The match ran 4 hours, 24 minutes -- the longest of the tournament.Biggest disappointment?Atkin: After almost beating Serena in the third round last year, Heather Watson had a poor showing 12 months on, losing in the first round to Annika Beck. No one was more disappointed than the Briton, who angrily slammed her racket to the turf during the match, earning a $12,000 fine.Bodo: Garbine Muguruza had a chance to position herself as the leading candidate to succeed Serena. Instead, she played a poor, low-energy second-round match against Jana Cepelova.Garber: Djokovic, who lost in the third round to Sam Querrey. Seemed like after finally winning the French Open, he took his foot off the gas.Wilansky: Could make a case for Djokovic, but cant blame him for still reveling in his French Open laurels. Instead, the dubious honor belongs to wonderkid Dominic Thiem, who fell meekly in the second round.Biggest surpriseAtkin:?Willis won six matches to qualify for the main draw, then shocked Ricardas Berankis, a player ranked 718 places above him, to earn a Centre Court date with Roger Federer and a check for £50,000.Bodo: Despite a few good weeks, Kerber basically struggled after she beat Serena for the Australian Open title. She bounced back from a dreadful first-round loss in Paris to make another major final and vault to No. 2 in the rankings.Garber:?Querrey, for sure. The American put it all together and made his first major quarterfinal. Lets see if this gives him momentum to get to the next level.Wilansky: Venus Williams. At 36 years old, no one thought she had a semifinal run left in her -- except Venus herself. Air Max 97 Canada Clearance . -- Stanfords Kevin Danser knelt on one knee and hardly moved on the sideline as Michigan State celebrated its Rose Bowl victory and his Cardinal teammates made their way to the locker room. Wholesale Air Max 97 Canada . -- An ugly goal by Nick Bonino helped the Anaheim Ducks overcome the defensive-minded Phoenix Coyotes on a night when their ragged power play continued to struggle. http://www.cheapairmax97canada.com/ .C. -- Chris Thorburn thinks one of the reasons the Winnipeg Jets have been successful under new coach Paul Maurice is that theyre playing together as a team. Air Max 97 Canada Sale . Barcelona also left injured defenders Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba out of its squad for the trip to Glasgow. That means that Marc Bartra will probably start again in the centre of the defence alongside Gerard Pique. Cheap Air Max 97 Canada .J. -- Marty Brodeur beat the Pittsburgh Penguins yet again. EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A doctor accused of sexual abuse by two gymnasts -- including a former U.S. Olympian -- was investigated by Michigan State University authorities in 2014 over a another allegation of misconduct, but the school found no violation of its policy.School spokesman Kent Cassella said Tuesday that local prosecutors did not file charges two years ago following an investigation by MSU police. The revelation of a complaint by the Michigan State graduate comes after two gymnasts, including a member of the 2000 U.S. womens Olympic team, said they were sexually abused as teenagers by Larry Nassar, a former longtime doctor for USA Gymnastics.Nassar is accused of sexually groping and fondling the Olympian during her elite career, according to a lawsuit filed last week in California by the athlete under the name Jane Doe.The second gymnast, Rachael Denhollander of Louisville, Kentucky, told the Indianapolis Star newspaper that Nassar sexually abused her in 2000 while she underwent treatment for lower back pain at Michigan State, where Nassar is a faculty member. She said she filed a complaint last month with university police.Michigan State temporarily reassigned Nassar, 53, from clinical and patient duties as of Aug. 30, a day after Denhollanders complaint was made to authorities. Cassella said that was the first time the school was aware of the allegation.Cassella said the school investigated Nassar previously, however. In a separate incident in 2014, MSU authorities investigated a complaint of misconduct against Larry Nassar, Cassella said in an email. The complaint, filed by a recent female MSU graduate at the time, involved an allegation of abuse during a medical procedure. An administrative investigation revealed no violation of MSU policy, and the local prosecutors office did not file charges after an investigation by MSU police.During the investigation, Nassar was temporarily reassigned from his clinical and patient duties.Nassars attorney, Matthew Borgula, defended the doctor in an email to The Associated Press on Tuesday night.MSU and local authorities conducted aan investigation and found that there was no violation of law, nor of MSU policy and no lawsuit was ever filed.ddddddddddddDr. Nassar met with authorities at the time and completely cooperated, Borgula said. This claim, like the current allegations bantered about in the press, are wholly without merit. Dr. Nassar has never conducted any medical procedure at MSU without the full consent of his patient, and if the patient is a minor, without the parents consent. He has never been sued, until the recent lawsuit filed in California, and he has never been charged with a crime, it continued. He has been a physician for over 23 years, and part of the USA Gymnastics medical team for 29. During that time, no one has ever lodged a complaint against him that he was aware.USA Gymnastics released a statement Monday night indicating that it cut ties with Nassar when the organizations President Steve Penny went to authorities immediately after learning of athlete concerns about Nassar in the summer of 2015.When asked Tuesday by the AP if it notified Michigan State or other entities affiliated with Nassar about the concerns raised, USA Gymnastics spokesperson Leslie King referred back to the organizations statement on Monday.USA Gymnastics has cooperated fully with the law enforcement agency since we first notified them of the matter, including -- at their request -- refraining from making further statements or taking any other action that might interfere with the agencys investigation, the statement read.USA Gymnastics has not identified the organization it contacted, also at the request of the law enforcement agency.USA Gymnastics said Tuesday night it was not contacted about Michigan States 2014 investigation of Nassar.Cassella said the school didnt consider contacting USA Gymnastics in 2014 because the administrative investigation revealed no violation of MSU policy and no charges were filed.---AP Sports Writer Will Graves in Pittsburgh contributed to this report.
