MIAMI -- Manager Don Mattingly says the Miami Marlins will find out a lot about their team down the stretch by being in a playoff race for the first time in more than a decade. What theyre learning lately has been discouraging. Sputtering Miami hit into a team-record six double plays Sunday to cap a rough week with a 3-1 loss to the San Diego Padres. The Marlins lost two of three to woeful San Diego and went 2-4 on their homestand while scoring only 13 runs, including just one run in the final two games.A couple of duds. Its tough, Mattingly said. Two in a row like this, you feel horrible.Seeking their first playoff berth since 2003, the Marlins begin a seven-game trip Monday at the Mets. Their first-year manager was so wound up by the latest defeat he launched into a five-minute monologue with reporters. As bad as it looks right now in this storm were in, its still doable, Mattingly said. Weve got to grow up, have an approach and be ready to play Monday. We cant go into New York dragging our heads. We have to continue to play. These are things were going to learn about this club. If were going to move forward as an organization, these are the things we have to do.Rookie Luis Perdomo took advantage of the double plays to pitch his first career complete game, and the first this year for the Padres. Perdomo needed only 99 pitches to throw a six-hitter.The most novel DP came in the seventh inning, when Perdomo gave up a one-out single before Ichiro Suzuki lined out to the pitcher, who trotted to first base to double off the runner.A little bit of luck in there, Mattingly said. There were some balls that were hit firm.Five Marlins hit into double plays, and they went 6-4-3, 4-6-3, 6-4-3, 6-3, 1, and 5-4-3. The six DPs were a nine-inning team record for the Padres defensively, and a Marlins batting record.Perdomo lowered his ERA from 6.24 to 5.84 and beat Miami for the second time this year.He commanded his sinker well and got us to ground out, said the Marlins Dee Gordon, who was erased twice on the bases by double plays and hit into a DP. Hats off to him. He pitched a great game and kept us off balance.Justin Nicolino (2-6), making his first start since July 6, gave up three runs in six innings. That included a pair of two-out RBI hits.Two-out pitches youd like to have back, Nicolino said. Those two runs cost us.Nicolino was called up from Triple-A to replace Andrew Cashner, who was scratched because of a finger blister.Doubles by J.T. Realmuto and Xavier Scruggs in the second scored the Marlins run.UP NEXTMarlins: RHP Jose Fernandez (13-7, 2.91) is scheduled to start Monday at the Mets against RHP Rafael Montero (0-0, 11.57) to begin a four-game series. After he made eight saves in the first, Dallas put 22 on the Finn in the second, and he denied them all. He stopped 3 of 5 in the third. They came hard that period, they shot the puck a lot, Rinne said of the second. For the most part, I was able to see it. I felt good all night, and that was a busy period. Obviously now looking back, that was a big period just being able to defend that.Mike Fisher and Craig Smith also scored for Nashville, winners of three of four.Patrick Sharp and Brett Ritchie scored and Kari Lehtonen made 16 saves for the Stars, who have lost two of three. There was a lot of good stuff in the game, Dallas coach Lindy Ruff said. Our energy was good. I thought the second period on, our breakouts coming out of our own end were good.Forsberg scored the games first goal with 5:08 left in the opening period. With the puck above the right faceoff circle, P.K. Subban sent a pass to Forsberg in the lower part of the left circle. There, Forsberg squeezed the puck in between Lehtonens right skate and the right post.It was a really nice play by Subby to find me back door and I just tried to hit the net, Forsberg said.It was Forsbergs second goal of the season. In 2015-16, Forsberg matched a franchise record with 33 goals.Subban has points in four consecutive games.Fisher doubled the lead with 3:54 left in the second. It was the first of the season for Sharp, who missed 14 games with concussion-like symptoms before returning Nov. 17.Yeah, disappointing third period, Sharp said. We kind of put ourselves in a good spot there on the road trailing by one against a tough team. Its not a bad spot to be in, but a couple of mistakes ended up being the difference in the game.Johansen answered 41 seconds later with a power-play goal. Neal sent a pass from the left circle in front to Johansen, who had a tap-in for his second of the season. That was a really big goal, Nashville coach Peter Laviolette said. At that point, they had fired a lot of shots, a lot of attempts. We were on the power play and theres a chance to really blow it open, and we give one back the other way. I dont think there was much time left in the power play, maybe 25 seconds or so and to go out there, get it in and get it to the net, and score a goal and take back the two goals at that point I think was really important. The assist was the 200th of Neals career.Smith scored with 8:51 left off Forsbergs pass.Ritchie scored his sixth of the season with 1:16 left, but Neal answered a minute later with an empty-net goal.Game notes Nashville D Ryan Ellis played in his 300th career NHL game. ...
