LOS ANGELES -- As Vin Scully closes out his career broadcasting Los Angeles Dodgers games, his successor is waiting in the wings.Joe Davis has been working road games for the team this season, warming up for next year when the 28-year-old moves into Scullys old booth full-time.Davis shares a philosophy with Scully: Its not about the broadcaster, its about the game. That should come as a relief to Dodgers fans who for 67 years havent heard anyone except Scully wax lyrical about their beloved team.Early on in my career I obsessively tried to nail the basics, Davis said, citing time, game situation and score, pronouncing names and getting the facts right. If youre not good fundamentally than you lose all credibility before anyone knows what you sound like.Davis was hired by the team last November to work with former Dodgers Orel Hershiser and Nomar Garciaparra calling 50 road games on SportsNet LA, the teams television channel that isnt widely seen in Los Angeles because of an ongoing dispute between Time Warner Cable, which carries it, and other pay TV providers. This year there were plenty of nerves going into it because of the unknown and how people would accept me, he said. Its exceeded expectations with how positive people have been. Some critics have pounced on social media, telling Davis that hes no Scully.Im always happy to remind them that nobody is, he said.Next year, Davis will do play-by-play with Hershiser and Garciaparra analyzing the action. Its ridiculous how confident he is, how prepared he is, how much passion he has for the job, Hershiser said of his young sidekick. Thats going to serve him really well.Scully called Davis the night before his hiring was announced to welcome him and assure him it was a great gig.Ive saved that voicemail in about a hundred different places, he said. A part of me is glad I missed the call. This season, Davis has flown from his home in Michigan to wherever the team is on the road. When the Dodgers are in Los Angeles, Scully works the games with Davis listening to the icon from long distance. He looks forward to being around the team full-time.Theres something romantic about baseball broadcasting, he said, and how that story writes itself over the course of an entire season.Davis grew up in tiny Potterville, Michigan, near Lansing, as a Chicago Cubs fan, listening to Pat Hughes call their games. Nationally, hes been influenced by Fox Sports announcer Joe Buck.Although Davis hasnt sought out Scully for advice, not wanting to badger him in his final months, the Hall of Famer was asked recently if he had any.Be himself, Scully said. Thats the hardest thing in the world to be.Like Scully, Davis has strong support at home.He and wife Libby, along with their 3-month-old daughter, Charlotte, are house hunting in Los Angeles in preparation for moving here full-time. The couple met as students at Beloit College in Wisconsin, where he earned a communications degree while playing quarterback and wide receiver on the football team.Shes seen me do games for nothing and make $16,000 a year doing minor league baseball, he said. She is the real star in the whole thing.Davis has called baseball, college football and basketball for Fox Sports, something he will continue to do, which means he wont broadcast the Dodgers entire 162-game schedule. He declined to specify how many games hell miss. That was a big thing for me, he said. I didnt want to give up the national stuff.Davis is six years older than Scully was when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers radio and TV booth as a 22-year-old in 1950.The Dodgers are not ones to change much, Hershiser said. Once the audience gets used to him and likes him, maybe hell be here forever. Wholesale Air Jordan Online . Perhaps as a hitter, too. Minor homered for his first two RBIs in the majors and struck out 10 as the Braves posted their second win in a matter of hours, beating the New York Mets 6-0 Saturday for their eighth straight victory. "Hes been fun to watch," Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez said, later adding, "hes a good athlete." Earlier, Dan Uggla hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning and the Braves won 7-5 in the resumption of a game suspended because of rain Friday night after eight innings with the score tied. Minor (6-2) then pitched 7 1-3 innings of three-hit ball, sending the Mets to their fifth loss in a row overall and eighth straight at Citi Field. Minor was hardly a force at the plate coming in -- he was a paltry 8 for 108 (.074) in four seasons, striking out in exactly half of those at-bats. He perked up for his first two-hit game in the majors. "Streaky," he kidded. In the third inning, Minor singled to become the Braves first baserunner of the game, and a bat boy brought him a warmup jacket on a blustery, cool evening. The next time up in the fifth, with a light rain, the 25-year-old lefty never had time to get chilly. Despite gusts that kept knocking down fly balls, Minor hit a two-run drive inside the left field foul pole off Dillon Gee (2-6) that broke a scoreless tie. "Got to have power, like me," Minor said with a grin. Minor homered for the first time since his senior year of high school, and it touched off a five-run burst. Minor connected after a two-out single by Chris Johnson, and they smiled the whole way from home plate back to the bench. Minors teammates celebrated the shot, too, and big first baseman Freddie Freeman hugged the pitcher and playfully jumped up and down with him in the dugout. Catcher Brian McCann, however, reminded Minor that there was still work to do on the mound. "Didnt try to live in that moment of the home run," Minor said. The Braves got six straight hits in their surge, including doubles by Justin Upton and Andrelton Simmons and singles by Jason Heyward and Freeman. "All of a sudden, seemed I just got in the stretch and I just lost it," Gee said. "I got to keep looking forward, keep working hard. If I keep looking back on the past theres nothing good there right noww," he said.dddddddddddd There was a brief delay when Minor batted in the seventh because the wind whipped up the dirt and blew more than 150 hot dog wrappers and other pieces of debris all over the field. Stadium workers cleared the mess when the half-inning ended, shortly after Freemans second RBI single. There was a fireworks show after the game. The seats were nearly empty, with few bundled-up fans sticking around. The Braves and Mets took 42 minutes to complete the resumption, and there was a 36-minute break between the games. The suspended game picked up right where it left off, at the start of the ninth inning. There was no national anthem, fans were scattered in the stands and it was cloudy and windy with temperatures in the low 50s. After Upton grounded into an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners in the Atlanta ninth, the Braves won it in the 10th. Freeman, who homered Friday night before the rain came, drew a leadoff walk from Brandon Lyon (1-2) and took third on a double by McCann. Uggla, who hit a late home run the previous night at Citi Field, followed with his tiebreaking single. B.J. Upton later squeezed home pinch-runner Jordan Schafer. Anthony Varvaro (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth. He worked the eighth a day earlier and gave up two runs that made it 5-all. Craig Kimbrel escaped a two-on, no-out jam in the 10th for his 15th save in 18 tries. The Braves previous suspended game was April 5, 1997, against the Cubs -- it was the second game ever played at Turner Field and was stopped because of rain in the seventh inning. Atlanta won the resumption the next day. The Mets lost in their first suspended game since Aug. 6, 1986, when the second game of a doubleheader against the Cubs was halted after the seventh for darkness -- Wrigley Field didnt have lights then. The Mets won the completion the next day. NOTES: The Braves pitched their fourth shutout of the season. The Mets have been blanked three times. ... Atlanta has won five straight at Citi Field. ...
