EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France -- Defending champion Lydia Ko starts her bid for a third major title by the age of 19 at the Evian Championship, the final major of the season. But it will be hard to match her performance last year, let alone improve it.She became the youngest major champion in LPGA history with her six-shot triumph, sinking a 15-foot birdie putt to close with a final-round 63 for an LPGA record low last round by a winner at a major.A lot of memories of walking down the 18th on that last day, Ko said Wednesday ahead of Thursdays opening round. It was so much more than I could have ever imagined.Since then, the South-Korean born New Zealander has picked up five more titles, including a second major at the ANA Inspiration in April. She also came back from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics with a silver medal, finishing behind South Korean Inbee Park.Ko truly announced her arrival on the biggest stage as a 16-year-old when she finished second in Evian in 2013 -- the year it became the fifth major in womens golf. Tipped as a future great in her mid-teens, she was already the youngest winner on the Tour after winning the 2012 Canadian Womens Open. There has been no stopping her, and last year she became the youngest woman or man to be ranked No. 1.As well as clinching a third major, Ko has another target in mind. She hopes to win the third edition of the Rolex Annika Major Award, which rewards the player with the best combined record at all five majors and is named after 10-time major winner Annika Sorenstam. It would mean so much, Ko said. Without players like her, there might not be a Tour like it is today.American Michelle Wie won it in 2014 and Park was last years winner. Also in contention this year are womens PGA champion Brooke Henderson, U.S. Open winner Brittany Lang, and British Open champion Ariya Jutanugarn.Ko and the 20-year-old Jutanugarn will clinch the trophy with a win. They are also competing for the Rolex Player of the Year award, which is shaping up as a two-way race between them.Ko is just five points ahead of Jutanugarn, while Henderson sits is third place -- although the 19-year-old Canadian is a long way back.To me its very cool. Its been like this when we were juniors because we played together, Lydia used to be No. 1, Im second, and Brooke used to play really good, Jutanugarn said. To me its just like junior golf again -- but were professionals and we can have fun and make some money, so thats more fun.Jutanugarn leads the LPGA Tour with five wins this year, and all of those have been won without using a driver.I tried to hit driver on Monday, but Im not really comfortable because this course is really narrow, she said. So, no driver this week.Chinas Shanshan Feng, who placed third here last year, will be in confident mood after her bronze medal at the Rio Olympics. She was stunned by her reception when she returned to China. When I landed in Guangzhou it was surprising kind of because there were more than 100 people waiting for me, and that made me feel like I was a star, she said. I think there will be more people that will actually start to join the sport. But its going to take a little time. She has certainly being doing her bit to draw more attention to golf. When the nations Olympic medalists met China President Xi Jinping on their return home, she made quite an impression. The others didnt say anything. But when it came to my turn, I was like, `President, youre so handsome. she said. I did say that. I mean, I really felt that. I think its a compliment. So its nothing bad.One notable absentee at Evian this year is Park, who is getting rehabilitation on her troublesome thumb. But South Korean Hyo Joo Kim, the 2014 champion, is competing. She shot the lowest round in major history with a 61 during the first round here two years ago.Americans Lexi Thompson, last years runner-up, two-time major winner Stacy Lewis are also in action. Hazard cut in from the left and scored with a swerving right-footed shot for ninth goal of the season, which proved to be enough for the victory despite Chelseas forwards again lacking a cutting edge up front. Jamal Crawford Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. ROME -- Six-time champion Rafael Nadal overcame one of the worst opening sets of his career to edge Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday and reach the Italian Open quarterfinals. Nadals performance, and sometimes sluggish movement on the court, raised questions about whether he will be able to successfully defend his title at the French Open. The years second Grand Slam starts in 10 days. Nadal will next face fourth-seeded David Ferrer, who advanced when Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany withdrew because of dizziness. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic had a far easier time than Nadal, beating Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-4 to improve his clay-court record this season to 8-1. Also, second-seeded Roger Federer breezed by Gilles Simon of France 6-1, 6-2. In womens action, Serena Williams routed 14th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova 6-0, 6-1 for her 21st consecutive win, matching the best streak of her career. In the other half of the draw, second-seeded Maria Sharapova swept aside No. 16 Sloane Stephens -- the American who reached the Australian Open semifinals -- 6-2, 6-1. Nadal, however, was far from his best, especially in the first set, in which Gulbis took a 5-0 lead and even had a point to close out the set at love. But Nadal, who has reached the final in all seven tournaments he has played since returning to the circuit in February from a seven-month break because of a left knee injury, eventually began to win the longer points while the carefree Gulbis started to commit more errors. Nadal won last weeks Madrid Open but his run of eight consecutive titles in the Monte Carlo Masters ended last month with a straight-set loss to Djokovic in the final. Nadal said this week he now trains for about 50 minutes a day compared with two hours a year ago. "I really dont want to talk about my knee. Im fine. I (fought) a lot to be where I am today," Nadal said. "These matches like today where youre in trouble all the time but you keep fighting for every ball, this victory means a lot. To have another one like this is very special." Gulbis had given Nadal trouble before, also taking a set off the Spaniard in four of their previous five meetings, all of which Nadal won. For the first half of this match, Gulbis dominated with his big serve and forehand while Nadal made a series of forehand errors. At one point late in the first set, Nadal didnt even move when Gulbis returned his serve within reach. Gulbis held serve in all 17 games of his first two main-draw matches and Nadal didnt break him until he took a 5-3 lead in the second set. At times, Nadal was returning so far behind the baseline that Gulbis was able to step into the court and push Nadal to the corners. "I thought I was the better player in the match," Gulbis said. "But he is the champion and, well, I lost against him in Indian Wells when I also thought I played better than him.dddddddddddd He is solid and he didnt do anything special and I made mistakes and so he won." Nadal didnt agree with Gulbis assessment. "Normally -- I dont say always, but normally -- the best player wins," Nadal said. "If the best player was the one who tried to find solutions against a player that tried to hit every ball very hard. ... I (kept) fighting and concentrating every moment. ... If thats something then probably the best player won." Gulbis has had success in Rome before, upsetting Roger Federer in the second round in 2010 and reaching the semifinals, where he lost a close three-set match to Nada
