hat at one point she wasnt sure she would ever surf again following a snowboarding accident. During her freshman year at Colorad Antworten

Ronda Rousey will end a 412-day layoff when she makes her long-awaited return to the Octagon on Dec. 30 against womens bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207.Coming back on her own terms, the 29-year-old Rousey will compete for the title she relinquished in such demoralizing fashion last November against Holly Holm in Australia, which kick-started a wild eight-month span that saw the UFCs 135-pound title change hands three times. But lets be careful not to bury the lead here. Even more important than the pre-fight themes surrounding whether Rousey (12-1) will ever be the same is the fact that she has done herself no favors in the matchmaking department.Stylistically speaking, Nunes (13-4) is about as dangerous an opponent as Rousey could test herself against because of one unavoidable truth: The Brazilians greatest strength is Rouseys most glaring weakness. Its not that Nunes, who upset Miesha Tate at UFC 200 in July to win the title via first-round submission, is without flaws. In fact, which has become an asterisk when handicapping Nunes biggest fights, the longer the bout goes, the more it favors her opponents. But stamina issues aside, Nunes is the most dangerous female fighter in the UFC during the first five minutes of a fight not named Cris Justino (which is the reason a Rousey-Justino fight has become the holy grail of UFC superfights that have yet to come to fruition).Nunes-Rousey may not offer the exact same level of fanfare as that bout, but it offers Rousey a similar level of danger due to Nunes quick hands and powerful strikes. And for as dominant as Rouseys incredible run has been -- with six UFC title defenses, including four straight within the first 66 seconds -- critics waited anxiously for her first true test against a dominant striker. Some believed it would come from Cat Zingano at UFC 184, until her mistake of recklessly rushing in prevented us from finding out as Rousey submitted her in 14 seconds. Rouseys toughest test ultimately came from Holm, a decorated boxing champion, who used her flawless footwork to execute a game plan of circling away and catching Rousey coming in with stiff left hands.Nunes is a much different striker than Holm, a traditional counterpuncher, in that she lacks the same technique and patience. But shes much more powerful (able to end a fight with fewer strikes) and has developed accuracy with her looping right hand. For as much as the narrative could be spun to say that Nunes raw aggression and balance issues would play perfectly into Rouseys hands once the former champion is able to close distance and establish the clinch, the same could be said on the flipside. As she proved against Holm, Rousey doesnt know any style but full-speed ahead, which leaves her incredibly vulnerable to big right hands in the opening minute. And getting to Rousey early with big punches has long been the hopeful blueprint of what it will take to defeat her, largely because of how poor her striking defense has been. While the knocks against the stamina and defense of Nunes are legitimate, shes also much bigger than Rouseys previous opponents not named Holm, which could negate the strength advantage Rousey is typically afforded (which helped Holm fight off early takedown and submission attempts). In addition, Nunes has a brown belt in judo and a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.Thats not to say that Nunes is unbeatable, with her weaknesses having been showcased in both a third-round TKO loss to Zingano in 2014 and a decision win over Valentina Shevchenko (who went on to defeat Holm) in March, in which she badly faded late. And as is the case in all Rousey fights, as soon as this one hits the ground for any prolonged length of time, the less likely Nunes is of avoiding Rouseys vaunted armbar. But this fight isnt ultimately about what happens in the later rounds or the intricacies of grappling and submission defense. Those are the elements that might ultimately decide the bout, but thats not what will draw the mainstream interest and pay-per-view buys. The intrigue of Rouseys return boils down to the first 60 to 180 seconds of the fight, where any traces of cage rust or a damaged aura of invincibility will be put to the test head on by Nunes powerful right hands. This is what makes the UFC so successful and exciting, that very few fighters are provided a soft touch at any given time. But as UFC president Dana White indicated during his media tour Wednesday to announce the fight, going directly after the title was Rouseys decision.Considering her value to the brand, its conceivable that Rousey could have taken a much softer touch upon her return, to build up her confidence against a fighter not as skilled (like Nunes) in the areas where she remains vulnerable. It also could have been easier for Rousey to have planned her return months earlier when the title was around the waist of Tate, whom she defeated in dominant fashion twice before. But credit Rousey for her fearlessness in attempting to reclaim more than just the title belt that her star power and undeniable charisma helped bring into existence almost four years ago (at a time when White proclaimed women would never compete in the UFC).At UFC 207, Rousey will very much be fighting to repair a portion of her legacy that was left behind in Australia last November. And as far as style clashes go, this wont be an easy task. Jordan 4 For Sale Cheap . To the surprise of many, it isnt the Wolverines but their in-state rivals the Michigan State Spartans. The move comes after the Canadiens were approached by the Buffalo Sabres for permission to speak to Dudley - a former Sabres player and head coach. Its what has propelled her through two Tough Mudder competitions and what she relied on when she started surfing again after becoming a paraplegic at age 18. So when the 31-year-old paddles out into the lineup at La Jolla Shores, California, for the Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship (Dec. 9-11), shell have one goal in mind.If I could get a really nice wave, thatd be sweet. Thatd be good, the Vancouver native says. She is the only woman on Team Canada in the nations first year participating in the contest. As soon as we were considering some competitors for this event, I knew immediately Victoria would be one of my first picks, says Gerry Burns, coach of Team Canada and a fellow adaptive surfer. Shes had an extensive surfing background, shes athletic, a go-getter and, I think, pretty hard-core, too, which is great, especially if the waves get big.It will be Feiges first surfing competition, a major feat considering that at one point she wasnt sure she would ever surf again following a snowboarding accident. During her freshman year at Colorado College, Feige -- who had a decade of snowboarding experience -- attempted a method grab, a move shed done successfully many times, and it went awry.It all went well until it just didnt, she says. I overshot the jump because I wanted to go big for a picture. So I went really big, and I didnt speed check. I knew in the air that I was rotating badly and it wasnt going super well.A faulty landing resulted in a fracture of her T12 vertebra, and initially she was paralyzed from the waist down. During her first two years of physical therapy, Feige was unable to walk more than 10 steps without full support. But through a rigorous physical therapy program and due to the nature of her injury, Feige was able to regain some of her ability to walk. Now, while she says she spends 80 to 90 percent of her time in a wheelchair, shes able to walk a little over a mile with the help of ankle braces and trekking poles.I didnt feel tremendous loss, Feige says of her post-injury life. I didnt go through a big depression. I didnt have a big freak-out. I was very motivated to live my life. I didnt want to be defined by it, more than anything, so I was pretty determined not to be like a cliché of someone who doesnt do as much anymore. And she hasnt slowed down. Shes an active swimmer, cyclist and sit-skier, and she works as a disabled skiing instructor. The injury also led to a career detour into physical therapy: She earned her masters degree in 2012 and now works full time as a physical therapist.Feige has also completed two Tough Mudder Whistler obstacle-course competitions, in 2013 and 2014. With the help of her team -- the Chair Bears -- Feige was able to riig her wheelchair into a makeshift rickshaw, replacing her back wheels with sturdier mountain bike wheels and attaching wooden handrails to the frame so that her teammates could help pull her from obstacle to obstacle.dddddddddddd[My teammates have] known me through physio school and knew the limitations of my body, she says. But I wanted to have an adventure, I wanted to have a good time, I wanted to push the limits, and they were game for that.Training for Tough Mudder included runs around the Vancouver seawall, with stops at the local park for chin-ups, pullups and army crawls. Throughout the course, Feige was able to use her upper-body strength to power through obstacles like the Everest (a steep wall climb) and the Funky Monkey (monkey bars). The experience was both challenging and exhilarating. But when it came to surfing -- a sport she had first picked up at age 16 -- following her injury, Feige was less sure. I had seen mono-skiers around Whistler, so I knew, straight off from the hospital, that I would be able to ski. The loss I felt, actually, was about surfing. I was like, You need strength and balance to surf. Even just getting down to the beach, hows that going to work?It wasnt until a family trip to Maui in 2007 that Feige got back in the water with a tandem surf lesson -- reinvigorating her waterwoman spirit. As soon as we caught that first wave, it was beautiful. It was that same feeling of being picked up by the water, the acceleration, the balance, she says. By the end of the lesson, she was doing assisted handstands on her board. In January 2015, Feige and her brother took a surf trip to Panama to build her skills on different types of breaks and on different types of boards -- skills shes ready to show off this weekend.[Victoria] exemplifies the perseverance and determination of the athletes that are competing in the 2016 Stance ISA World Adaptive Surfing Championship, ISA president Fernando Aguerre said in a statement to espnW. She didnt let her snowboarding accident deter her from pursuing her passions and an active lifestyle. The event is in its second year and will include 76 athletes from 22 countries. To prepare, Feige has been paddleboarding and swimming three times a week. She is particularly excited to meet fellow adaptive athletes and encourages other injured surfers to find their way back into the lineup the same way she has.People who love surfing are gonna surf. Once you try it, you get the bug. You cant turn that off, she says. And if you get injured, Id say you can still have this in your life. You can still get that feeling. Thats pretty cool. Its just so much fun, how could you stop? ' ' '
