RIO DE JANEIRO -- Indian archers will look to make amends for their flop show in London when they start their campaign at the 31st Olympic Games here on Friday.The countrys archers have participated in the Olympics since the sport was introduced in Seoul (1988). They have competed in six editions -- barring Sydney (2000) when they failed to qualify -- with their best performance being the quarterfinal finish by the womens team in Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008).By the 2012 Olympics, Deepika Kumari had become world No.1, along with her team, and expectedly the hopes from her skyrocketed. But the hype fizzled out in a few seconds when Deepika lost to Amy Oliver of Great Britain, while the team -- which also had Bombayla Devi Laishram and Chekrovolu Swuro -- went down to Denmark, both in first rounds.The cold weather, viral fever and the Olympic pressure factor was blamed for the poor performance. After the London debacle, the archers rankings dropped and Deepika battled inconsistent form that even forced her out of the team for some time in 2015.But she peaked at the right time to help the womens team clinch the quota berth in World Championship last year. That was followed by an individual qualification in the mens section. The womens team is now ranked fourth, while Deepika has slipped out of the top-10.In Rio, the womens team of Deepika, Bombayla and Laxmirani Majhi will be a strong contender for a medal.On Friday, the archers will begin their campaign with the mens individual and team ranking rounds in the morning.
