OXFORD, Miss. -- Three goals from a pair of Gator seniors gave the University of Florida soccer team a 3-0 win over Mississippi late Sunday afternoon at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. How the Gators Scored:The first goal of the match started when Sarah Troccoli won the ball at midfield when the Rebels were trying to move the ball forward. Troccoli moved down the middle and sent the ball right to Samantha Chung located just wide of the box. The cross from Chung found Savannah Jordan in the middle of the box. Jordan juggled for control, spun toward goal and scored from seven yards on a hard, right-footed shot.Another Gator senior scored to provide the Gators first-half goals. From just above the endline, sophomore Melanie Monteagudo sent a cross to the far post. Pamela Begi? was waiting on the end of that cross and headed it in. A Rebel defender attempted to clear that shot, but the official ruled the ball had crossed the goal. The Gators third goal started with a throw-in on the Mississippi half. The ball moved from Sarah Troccoli to Liz Slattery before Meggie Dougherty Howard received ball and moved toward goal. Her pass between a pair of Rebel defenders found Jordan in stride in the box. Then we had a little lapse because I think we thought it was a little too easy but I like how we responded in the second half. In a wide-ranging interview with GQ, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton told the magazine he doesnt think he is subjected to extra scrutiny because he is black. Its not racism, Newton told GQ. Everybodys entitled to their own opinion.Newton has been critiqued for his playing style and demeanor on and off the field throughout his five seasons in the NFL, and some have pointed to Newtons race as part of the reason he receives such criticism. The quarterback, however, dismissed that idea to GQ.I dont want this to be about race, because its not. Its not, Newton said. Like, were beyond that. As a nation. Before Super Bowl 50, Newton created headlines when he described himself as an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they havent seen nothing they can compare me to. He later eased off those comments in the run-up to his first Super Bowl appearance, when he became the sixth black quarterback to start the NFLs title game.I dont even want to touch the topic of black quarterback, because I think this game is bigger than black, white or green, Newton said in February before the game.
