Lakeside Hammers put in a dominant performance to beat the Belle Vue Aces 53-39 at Purfleet on Wednesday to go top of the table. The Essex club were never in any real danger throughout the meeting and survived a tactical ride from the Aces to take the points. Andreas Jonsson was the Hammers top man with 12+2, while Belle Vues Steve Worrall scored a stunning 17+1 from reserve. Lakeside Hammers went top of Elite League The home side had already built a nine-point advantage after four heats thanks to a Heat One 5-1 for Piotr Swiderski and Jonsson and a Heat Three 5-0 after both Aces riders fell and were excluded. Steve Worrall was the only Aces man to offer any resistance early on, winning Heats Two and Four in fine style. Steve Worrall was the man to beat on the night as he took the win in heat five after Max Fricke had touched the tapes and and the Aces got themselves back into the tie thanks to Matej Zagar and Craig Cook, who rounded the Hammers duo in spectacular style to ensure the 5-1. However, it was short lived as Kim Nilsson and Jonsson combined for a maximum in Heat Seven and the advantage was increased in Heat Eight as Richard Lawson took the chequered flag ahead of Steve Worrall who had passed Lewis Kerr to limit the damage for the Aces.Swiderski won heat nine with the Worrall brothers packing the minor placings for the Aces but being 11 points down Aces boss Mark Lemon decided to put Zagar on a tactical ride which he duly won. His teammate Fricke was passed by Lewis Bridger for second but a 7-2 put the away side back in contention on the night. Belle Vues Steve Worrall claimed the Rider of the Night award from Kelvin Tatum as he scored 17+1 for the Aces, including a great victory in Heat Two It would be as close as the Aces got though as the Hammers continued their dominance with a 4-2 in heat 11 as Jonsson beat Scott Nicholls, who had worked hard to get past Swiderski for second. The Aces night was compounded when Cook withdrew from the meeting with injury and it was all over after Heat 13 when Jonsson passed Steve Worrall for the win and Nilsson passed Zagar for third for another 4-2 and a ten point lead to the Hammers. The Hammers ensured the Aces would go home empty handed with another maximum in heat 14 after an incredibly tight run to the third turn on the back straight left Nicholls with nowhere to go, a decision the seven-times British champion was less than pleased about.Zagar won heat 15 for the Aces but it was Lakeside that ran out 53-39 winners to go top of the Elite League table. In the other meeting of the night, the Poole Pirates returned to winning ways, inflicting a first defeat of the season on the Wolverhampton Wolves with a 51-39 win at Wimborne Road. Hans Andersen was in top form for the Dorset club scoring 13+1 whilst Joonas Kylmakorpi hit 10+1 for the Wolves.Watch live coverage of Coventry v Wolverhampton in the Elite League on Sky Sports 1 HD on Monday night from 7.30pm. In a stunning twist, there is still hope Jamie Whincup could be crowned 2016 Bathurst 1000 champion after his Supercars team finally lodged an official appeal over the controversial Great Race finish.Governing body Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) has refused to rule out any possible outcome at Whincups hearing in Melbourne on Tuesday night when the Holden star will appeal a time penalty that cost him a fifth Bathurst 1000 win.Contrary to media reports, the result of the Bathurst 1000 is still subject to the courts final determination, a CAMS statement said. The court has the power to impose its own penalty which may or may not include time penalties. The drama began when Whincup crossed the line first in Sundays Great Race, only to be relegated to 11th after copping a 15 second time penalty for his role in a late incident that ended the winning chances of Volvos Scott McLaughlin and Holdens Garth Tander.Holdens Will Davison received the winners Peter Brock Trophy last weekend and looked set to hold onto it after Red Bull Racing suffered a setback on Friday. An interim ruling by the National Court of Appeal knocked back RBRs request to amend their appeal in a bid to have the charge dropped or the incident re-investigated.As a result, RBR can now only appeal the severity of Whincups time penalty at Tuesday nights hearing at the County Court of Victoria.A Supercars statement said at best, Whincups punishment could be cut to a 10-second penalty, earning him eighth place in the Great Race and 338 extra championship points.dddddddddddd.That would have ensured no change to the Bathurst podium. However, CAMS have not ruled out any possible outcome including Whincup being installed as a belated Bathurst winner after RBR officially lodged their appeal by the 1755 AEDT Friday deadline, after receiving a 24 hour extension from the governing body.It is believed if RBR have the punishment successfully downgraded to a 10 second time penalty they can argue that Whincup redressed his race position behind McLaughlin before the spectacular lap 150 incident that cost the Volvo driver and Tander. If they can prove that, Whincups penalty will be served and he will receive the Bathurst 1000 crown.Supercars boss James Warburton said he preferred the Bathurst 1000 winner be decided on a race track, not a court room.Supercars Australia respects the right of all teams to appeal the decisions of stewards, he said. However, it also recognises the groundswell of opinion from teams, drivers and fans who have expressed a strong desire to see one of Australias biggest sporting events decided on the racetrack and not in a court room.Either way, Whincups fate is not expected to be known until early next month.A verdict may not be handed down until 14 days after the appeal is heard - in this case as late as November 2.If unsuccessful, RBR can appeal through the FIA International Court of Appeal.
