CLEVELAND -- One show, one match at a time, CM Punk climbed to the top of pro wrestling, acquiring unimagined fame and fortune along the way.It wasnt enough. He needed more, a challenge to satisfy his inner drive. A dream. And now, he said, here I am.On the verge of stepping into the UFCs octagon, an arena where some say he doesnt belong. One of WWEs biggest stars before leaving the squared circle two years ago, Punk makes his long-awaited debut as an MMA fighter on Saturday night in UFC 203, where he wont be in the main event but where hes the top draw and greatest curiosity. When he takes center stage a month shy of his 38th birthday, Punk, who was born Phil Brooks, will complete a two-year journey that began on Jan. 27, 2014, when he informed WWE chairman Vince McMahon that he was done with wrestling. That conversation took place in Quicken Loans Arena, where Punks first foray in mixed martial arts will be witnessed by more than 20,000 fans and a pay-per-view audience interested in his unique story. The symmetry is not lost on Punk, who has spent grueling hours training for his bout with 24-year-old Mickey Gall. Just as he was in his days as a brash, do-whatever-it-takes-to-win wrestler, Punk is certain hell come out victorious.I belong here and my team belongs here, he said earlier this week. Im confident in my preparation. To me, its never too late to start something. If you think otherwise, Im sorry your dreams are so small.Punks fight with Gall will precede a heavyweight title matchup between champion -- and Cleveland native -- Stipe Miocic, who will take on Alistair Overeem, one of the divisions top-ranked contenders. Also Fabricio Werdum, knocked out in the first round by Miocic in May, will take on Travis Browne in a rematch. While former pro wrestler Brock Lesnar successfully transitioned from wrestling to MMA, he didnt attempt it as deep into his athletic career as Punk, who says the pace of UFC training is more conducive to family life after years on the road performing in arenas around the world. He has spent the past 12 months in Milwaukee, working with Duke Roufus and others at the Roufusport Martial Arts Academy. You have good days, you have bad days. You have frustrating days. You have breakthroughs. You turn corners. You make friends. You are with your team. Your team is your family, he said. No matter how frustrating or how bad a day got, its still awesome Im enjoying all of this. Youve got to be a sick individual to enjoy some of the gnarlier aspects of the training, but this has been amazing.Unlike the scripted WWE, where outcomes are decided long before wrestlers lock arms, nothing is planned inside the UFCs caged, eight-sided playpen.Punk has prepared himself as best he can for the chaos that takes place, but acknowledges there are some unknowns. Hes lost more than 20 pounds from his wrestling days, but feels more than adequately adept in his new sport.I use the correlation of you know how to drive an automatic car and now youre learning how to drive a stick shift, Punk said in comparing the athletic adjustment hes made. If you think too much about it, youre not going to be able to do it, but if you learn and you practice and you drill and youre serious about it, you can drive it and then it becomes second nature. Youre still driving a car.For Gall, the matchup with Punk fulfills his own dream. He gravitated to MMA after trying other sports, then took advantage of an appearance on UFC President Dana Whites online series, Looking For a Fight. Gall won his first fight, then challenged Punk immediately afterward. Without any video to watch on Punk, Gall said hes prepared for whatever comes at him.Ill be ready for everything, he said. Im going to fight my fight and Im going to find a way to get him out of there.Since cutting ties from wrestling to try UFC, Punk has been targeted by fans, media members and athletes who have questioned his motives and doubt his chances to succeed.Punk doesnt care. This is no act. This is who he is now.Its like when Michael Jordan went from playing basketball to baseball, he said. `Oh, baseballs too hard, hes not going to able to do it. Im awkward, uncoordinated and Im old and Im fat and Im lazy and I suck and I was a fake athlete, Im not going to be able to do it. If you believe all that stuff then youre not going to be able to do it. Air Max 97 Neon . Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo left Saturdays 24-21 loss to the Roughriders with a suspected concussion after taking a hit from Saskatchewan defensive end Ricky Foley on the first play of the second quarter and did not return. "Ive got a headache, I felt it right when I got hit and from there it hasnt gone away so they just kept me away from the game," said Calvillo, who added that he didnt remember being hit but didnt think the impact with the ground was what caused his injury. "Im assuming that it is (a concussion)." Calvillo had not been formally diagnosed in the minutes immediately after the game and said his status for Montreals game against the B.C. Lions on Thursday would be determined later in the week. He was replaced in the game by Josh Neiswander, who completed 12 of 30 passes for 147 yards and two interceptions in his CFL debut at quarterback. The win solidified the Roughriders (6-1) place atop the CFLs West Division while Montreal (2-5) lost its second straight game under new head coach Jim Popp, despite 146 yards receiving from S.J. Green. It turned out Calvillos injury was only a sign of things to come for both teams. Montreals injured list grew before halftime when receiver Brandon London took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Saskatchewan safety Tyron Brackenridge and did not return. Alouettes linebacker Kyries Hebert was also knocked out of the game on the same drive. He was kneed in the head by teammate Martin Bedard while covering a punt. The Roughriders werent immune to the injury bug either. Wide receiver Rob Bagg went down just before halftime, appearing to injure his left knee on a routine blocking assignment. Bagg had season-ending surgery in 2012 to repair a torn ACL in the same knee. "I feel so bad for the guy," said Riders slotback Geroy Simon, who became the third player in CFL history to reach 1,000 receptions when he caught a four-yard pass from Darian Durant early in the fourth quarter. "Im a fan of Rob Bagg, even when I played for B.C. all those years. He plays so hard and hes such a gifted, talented guy. To see him go down, no matter what it is, you dont want to see a guy like that get hurt because he works so hard in practice and puts everything he has into it." Roughriders head coach Corey Chamblin had no update on Baggs condition after the game. Saskatchewan survived another scare earlier in the game when Weston Dressler came up unable to move his left shoulder after diving out the back of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.dddddddddddd Unlike the others, Dressler was able to return to the game. That twist of fate proved critical late in the game when Dressler returned a Montreal punt 38 yards to the Alouettes 38-yard line. Dresslers punt return put the Riders in scoring position and Chris Milo won the game on a 36-yard field goal with no time left on the clock. Dressler was filling in for Jock Sanders after Sanders fumbled twice deep in Saskatchewan territory, setting up two of Alouettes kicker Sean Whytes four field goals on the night. "It didnt happen the way we planned it but we kept fighting, (Durant) trusted me and I made a play when it came to me," said Taj Smith, who caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Durant to tie the game 21-21 with barely a minute to play. That catch came just seconds after Jerald Brown returned Durants second fumble of the game for a 54-yard score to put Montreal ahead by seven. It was also finally enough to silence the boos of the third-largest crowd ever at Mosaic Stadium -- announced at 40,637. The fans showed their dissatisfaction with Durant through most of the third quarter. Durant ultimately went 18-for-32 for 250 yards in his sixth straight game without an interception. "The fans, they want perfection and Ive been here eight years and Ive been booed plenty of times so it was nothing new," he said. "Of course its nothing you want to hear but at the same time you understand why and if you dont want to hear it, just go out there and make plays and give them something to cheer about." Saskatchewan led for most of the first half but had to rally for the win after Sanders coughed up the ball on the opening kickoff of the second half. That turnover gift-wrapped an 11-yard field goal from Whyte and gave the Alouettes an 11-9 lead. The Riders tied the game when Whyte gave up a safety instead of punting from his own 11-yard line and took a temporary lead on the second play of the fourth quarter when Milo kicked a 26-yard field goal. Milo has now hit all 16 of his field goal attempts this year. Whyte tied the game 14-14 on his fourth field goal of the game early in the fourth quarter and had all of Montreals offence up until that point, having also kicked two singles - one on his only missed field goal of the game and the other on a punt single in the third quarter. Punter Ricky Schmitt also kicked two singles for Saskatchewan. ' ' '
