NEW YORK -- Traveling to the Olympics? Dont let illnesses meddle with your fun.Roughly half a million people from around the world are expected to travel to the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. And while Zika is in the spotlight, there are other bugs and health problems that Olympic athletes and spectators should keep in mind.Whats the biggest threat? Health experts say the most likely cause of death or serious harm to travelers everywhere is injuries from car accident, falls, crime or other mishaps. But thats not whats on the minds of people headed to the Olympics, said Dr. Nicholas Van Sickels, associate director of Tulane Universitys travel medicine clinic in New Orleans.Zika is what brings them in the door, Van Sickels said of recent clinic visitors.A look at those health problems, and what athletes and travelers can do about them.---HOW BIG A THREAT IS ZIKA?The risk of getting sick from Zika is low, especially compared to other illnesses that a visitor to Rio might suffer. Its winter in Brazil; a time when mosquitoes that spread the virus are at a low ebb. But for mothers-to-be, the stakes are very high because an infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects. Thats why pregnant women have been told to stay away.---BUT HOW CAN I AVOID ZIKA?The virus is mainly spread by tropical mosquitoes, though it also can be transmitted through sex. Travelers can protect themselves from mosquito bites by, among other things, wearing long sleeves and long pants and using insect repellents. Also, stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens, the CDC suggests.---WILL I KNOW IF IM INFECTED?You might not. Most infected people do not get sick, and those that do usually experience only mild symptoms, like fever, rash, red eyes, joint pain, that ends within a week. But some infected adults have developed a paralyzing condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome.---WHAT ABOUT OTHER TROPICAL ILLNESSES?The same mosquito spreads other tropical illnesses, including chikungunya, which has been spreading in Brazil and other parts of South America in the last few years. It has some of the same symptoms as Zika, but the joint pain is often debilitating and can give people a stooped appearance -- the name chikungunya comes from a word meaning to become contorted. Like Zika, there is no vaccine or cure for it. There are vaccines or medicines for other mosquito-borne diseases seen in Brazil, including yellow fever, dengue fever and malaria. Those arent considered much of a threat for Olympic visitors, though.---WHAT ELSE COULD MAKE ME SICK?If a traveler to the Olympics gets sick, its most likely from drinking water or eating undercooked or unclean food, said Dr. Martin Cetron of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Food should be peeled, boiled or cooked. Avoid food from street vendors, and fruits and vegetables that have not been thoroughly washed, experts suggest. Drink bottled water or beverages. And maybe pack some medicine for diarrhea, Cetron said. Some swimming areas in Rio are contaminated with sewage, and the CDC advises avoiding swallowing mouthfuls of water and staying away from beaches with warning signs.---ANYTHING ELSE?Its flu season in the Southern Hemisphere, so expect that people in Rio may be sneezing or coughing and spreading flu germs. Flu and other respiratory illnesses are probably the second most common thing travelers to the Olympics will get, Cetron said. Wash your hands and drink lots of uncontaminated fluids, experts say.---WHAT IF I GET SICK IN BRAZIL?Eu me sinto doente. Thats Portuguese for I feel sick. Talk to a doctor or nurse if you feel very ill, especially if you have a fever, the CDC advised. The CDC website has information about finding medical care while abroad and also offers some health terms in Portuguese. Officials do not expect a lot of Olympic travelers to take Zika home with them. Researchers at Yale University recently estimated that there may be no more than 40 travelers going home from the Olympics with infections.---Online:CDC: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/aler...er-olympics-rio Packers Jerseys 2021 . The Vancouver coach and an announced sellout crowd of 18,910 watched in dismay as the Canucks lost 7-4 to the New York Islanders on Monday night by squandering a 3-0 lead in the third period. Green Bay Packers Pro Shop . Jane Virtanen scored two, and Alex Roach and Elliott Peterson rounded out the offence for the Hitmen (40-15-6). Brady Brassart chipped in with three assists. Colton McCarthy scored twice, Brayden Point had a goal and two assists, and Jack Rodewald also scored for the Warriors (15-35-9), who were 2 for 5 on the power play. https://www.packersjerseysale.com/ . It says Pocklingtons lawyer filed the appeal Friday in a California court. CTV Edmonton also says Pocklington gave a $100,000 cash deposit as part of the conditions of his bail, and that he will be out on bail until his appeal is heard. Fake Packers Jerseys . Still, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke thought taking him out before the fifth inning was an unusual move. "Im looking up at the board and hes got two hits given up and one run, and Im taking him out after the fourth inning," Roenicke said. Green Bay Packers Gear . James, who turned 29 on Monday, injured his groin Friday during the Heats overtime loss at Sacramento. He sat out the following game, a 108-107 win Saturday in Portland, before coming back to help send the Nuggets to their seventh consecutive loss. Chris Berman has taken his Swami Sez NFL picks segment, seen on SportsCenter, to ESPN Chalk. Each week during the NFL regular season, hell give his favorite picks against the spread here with a little further analysis.Season record: 38-18 ATS (last week: 4-1)?New York Giants at Cleveland BrownsAre the Browns really going to lose every game? Theyve played a bunch of close ones so far, but I dont think this is the week theyll get over the hump. This number isnt as high as youd think for a 7-3 team facing one thats 0-11, and the Giants are certainly susceptible to looking ahead. Luke McCown gives the Browns a chance to win, but the Giants pull another one out late as Cleveland forces them to play for 60 minutes.Score: New York Giants 23, Browns 20Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore RavensThe Ravens have lost five straight to the Bengals, and Baltimore coach John Harbaugh is on record as saying his team needs to beat Cincinnati to win the AFC North. Well, fortunate for the Ravens, this Bengals team is a little different than in years past. Baltimore needs Joe Flacco to stand up and be one of its best players, to complement a strong defense. Injuries to A.J. Green and Giovani Bernard are too much for the Bengals to overcome in this one.Score: Ravens 23, Bengals 16Jacksonville Jaguars at Buffalo BillsJacksonville played Detroit and Kansas City close, but sooner or later playing tough and having nothing to show for it catches up to a team. Buffalo is 5-5 and showed me something the past two weeks with the way it played in Seattle and in Cincy.dddddddddddd. The Bills have a real shot to make the playoffs, something they havent done this century (last trip was 1999). LeSean McCoy is banged up and Sammy Watkins might play sparingly, but Im not sure it matters in this one. Buffalo starts its playoff push.Score: Bills 24, Jaguars 14Carolina Panthers at Oakland RaidersCarolina is a game team and will give this its best shot, but it doesnt seem like its the Panthers year. The Panthers are running out of straws to grasp, and having Luke Kuechly (and Ryan Kalil) out for this one will really hurt. The Raiders are a first-place team and are starting to play like it. They pull another one out late at home.Score: Raiders 27, Panthers 21Kansas City Chiefs at Denver BroncosLast week was certainly a head-scratcher against Tampa Bay, as Kansas City doesnt usually lose at home?to under-.500 teams. The Chiefs need to play their best overall game of the year to win in Denver. They won there last year, so they wont be scared of the situation. Denver hasnt found its running game without C.J. Anderson, and I think the defense will be up to the task against Trevor Siemian. Justin Houston plays more of a role in this one and Kansas City wins on the road.Score: Chiefs 20, Broncos 19 ' ' '
