WASHINGTON -- The Washington Nationals World Series hopes took a serious blow Tuesday when All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos was diagnosed with a torn ACL in his right knee.Ramos is out for the rest of the season, including the playoffs, taking one of the most valuable players and a consistent power bat out of Washingtons lineup. He was hitting .307 with 22 home runs and 80 RBI and was one of baseballs best offensive catchers. Its unfortunate, general manager Mike Rizzo said. Wilsons having an All-Star season and really a breakout season for himself. So its disappointing. I feel bad for him.Manager Dusty Baker said Ramos will have surgery to repair the ligament, which he tore during an awkward landing while catching a relay throw from Ryan Zimmerman on Monday nightIts the same knee Ramos had two surgeries on in 2012 to repair a torn ACL and medial collateral ligament. The injury is a double dose of pain for Ramos given the proximity of the postseason and that hes set to become a free agent after the World Series.Theres never an opportune time, Baker said. This was the most inopportune time for this to happen. The NL East champions will go with a combination of Jose Lobaton and Pedro Severino behind the plate in Ramos absence. Lobaton is also a little banged up with an ankle injury, so the Nationals called up Spencer Kieboom as a third catcher.Baker is confident that Severino and Lobaton can make up for Ramos absence defensively but will count on reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper, second baseman Daniel Murphy and others to make up for the loss of a big bat.Well really miss his offense, Baker said. I told him: `Hey man, you and Daniel Murphy, particularly you two guys, carried us to this point. Now its up to some of the other guys to take us to the next level and then the next level after that.Murphy is dealing with a strained glute and Harper a left thumb injury. Baker expects Harper back this week as Washington tries to shore up home-field advantage and figures Murphy will be ready by Game 1 of the NL Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Oct. 7.Along with Ramos, Washington is unlikely to have pitcher Stephen Strasburg in the first round and potentially beyond because of a strained flexor mass in his right elbow. Rizzo said Strasburg threw from 90 feet Tuesday and is making progress, but the Nationals cant realistically expect the 15-game winner to be ready to face the Dodgers.I think it would be kind of pushing it, Rizzo said. Just the calendar, its unlikely that hed contribute in that first series.Baker is reluctant to use Cy Young candidate Max Scherzer on short rest in the playoffs unless its a dire emergency. Not having Ramos is close to a dire emergency for the Nationals. Baker went to work immediately after a 14-4 loss to Arizona on Monday night putting together lineups without Ramos.Ramos was having a career season going into free agency, with career highs in hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, runs scored, batting average, slugging percentage and OPS. Baker told Ramos, who he described as upbeat, that other athletes have come back from tearing an ACL twice in the same knee.I told him about (Minnesota Vikings running back) Adrian Peterson. He didnt really know who I was talking about, Baker said. Im positive as strong and as positive as he is and the way he works that hell be back stronger than ever. The timeline for recovery and rehab from ACL surgery puts Ramos start of the 2017 season in doubt and makes his free agency a giant question mark.Hes a big part of the team, the year he was having and him obviously not going to finish the year like he wanted to, Zimmerman said. I feel worse for him than I do for us. NHL Jerseys China . -- Anaheim Ducks defenceman Luca Sbisa will be out at least six weeks with a torn tendon in his right hand. Cheap Adidas NHL Jerseys . P.A. Parenteau scored early in the third period to help the Avs edge Toronto 2-1 on Tuesday night. Cory Sarich also scored for Colorado (3-0-0), which is off to its best ever start. https://www.chinanhljerseys.us/ . But now that hes in the NHL, the Calgary Flames centre showed big improvement in that department by scoring the winner in the eighth round of a 5-4 shootout victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday. NHL Jerseys Outlet . -- The Portland Timbers and Real Salt Lake played to a 0-0 tie Saturday night that left the top of the Western Conference standings unchanged. NHL Jerseys Sale . The International Olympic Committee released the official list of bid cities on Friday after the deadline for applications had passed. The candidates -- all previously announced in their own countries -- are: Almaty, Kazakhstan; Beijing; Krakow, Poland; Lviv, Ukraine; Oslo, Norway; and Stockholm. LEXINGTON, Ky. -- For once, Kentucky isnt being asked about whether it can end The Streak against Florida. The Wildcats face more questions about themselves after blowing another big lead in their opener last Saturday night against Southern Mississippi than about ending their futility against the Gators.Kentuckys 35-10 second quarter lead -- which it built on three turnovers and four Drew Barker touchdown passes -- was erased as the Golden Eagles scored 34 unanswered points en route to the 44-35 upset. Instead of building much-needed momentum for Saturdays nationally televised Southeastern Conference opener at Florida (1-0), Kentucky looks to avoid an 0-2 start and extending its losing streak against the Gators to 30 games. Floridas streak versus the Wildcats is the nations longest active over a major opponent in an annual series.Kentucky will be facing a Gators team in The Swamp with something to prove after Florida fell out of the Top 25 following its underwhelming 24-7 victory against UMass. But after some close games against Florida the past two seasons, Kentucky coach Mark Stoops believes his team is capable of finally closing the deal.If we go execute and play the very best that we can, then we will have a great opportunity, Stoops said Monday. And if we dont, then we will have no chance.A lot depends on if the Wildcats can put their missed opportunity behind them.Kentuckys defense is facing much of the scrutiny after blowing a big lead for the second straight game, including last seasons finale against in-state rival Louisville. The Wildcats allowed the Cardinals to score 31 unanswered points in a 38-24 loss last November and thhe Wildcats once again were not bowl eligible after the loss.ddddddddddddSaturdays promising start toward at least a six-win season began unraveling just before halftime as Southern Miss answered Kentuckys final TD with a quick score of its own. After that, it was all about the Golden Eagles -- who controlled the ball, the clock, forced three turnovers and outgained Kentucky 261-22 in the second half.Though Stoops said improvement is needed on a defense already lacking depth, he suggested that sustained offensive possessions could keep defenders from getting worn down.We had 10 possessions of under three plays, Stoops said, so, your defense is going to be on the field and we just got to find a way to respond. We just got to do a better job of mixing in our depth and getting some guys in there because thats a lot of possessions and they did a really good job of keeping us off balance.Despite the collapse and lack of postseason appearances, Stoops remains adamant about changing the programs losing mindset. He said players have reverted to bad habits when facing adversity but stressed the positives in the season opener that helped Kentucky jump out to the big lead -- such as the passing game and opportunistic defense. Now, he is reminding players about the importance of finishing the job.Well show them all the things we did well, all the things we need to do better, Stoops said, but I dont think it will be hard to get them motivated and get them going.---AP college football site: http://collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
